SummaryResumen
According to the *New York Herald* on February 25, 1862, Spanish forces in the Dominican Republic maintained social distance from natives while leasing land, driving up rents and creating a strong market for duty-free wooden houses from Baltimore and ship bread. The newspaper also reported that local copper ore contained gold, Samana coal beds showed promise for miners, and suggestions were made to relocate four million American "contrabands" to the island to develop its wealth. Additionally, correspondence from Trujillo, Honduras, dated February 5, reported that a recent revolution had culminated in the assassination of President Guardiola following a conspiracy sanctioned by Colonel Agurcia.
