Northampton, Nov. 20 —The policy

of the government at Washington in

practicing Intervention on the coun

tries of Nicaragua. Haiti, and Santo

Domingo was severely criticised by

Horace G. Knowles, former American

minister to the Dominican republic

and now consul for that country,

speaking under the auspices of the

Mampshire County Progressive club

at Carnegie hall tonight. Mr Knowles

said that the policies and acts pres

ented were not those of the American

people, nor even of the Amercian

Congress, but of the American gov

ernment. which notwithstanding the

fact that only Congress can declare

war, had committed acts of war in

these republics by the landing ot arm

ed forces.

Northampton, Nov. 21—The two

buildings occupied by J. E. Lambie

Co of Main street, and the stock

of dry goods, suits and coats, were de

stroyed by fire this morning at 4, and

there were heavy losses on the fur

niture stock of J. H. Quinn, and the

block occupied by Quinn, owned by

J. H. O'Dea, and smaller losses on the

clothing stocks of M. J. Keating, on

one side of the Lambie store, and Cof

fey Burke in the other side. The

present owners of Lambie Co are

George F. Edwards and James P.

Fairchild. The losses, as insurance

men figure them, probably are not

more than $250,000, but replacement

values at present high costs of build

ing construction mjght add another

$50,000 to the estimate of total loss.
