SummaryResumen

A Havana dispatch dated January 26 reported rumors that Spain would sign a treaty at the end of the month assuming a protectorate over San Domingo. This report caused much excitement in San Domingo and Hayti, further increasing the unpopularity of Baez, and was somewhat strengthened by the appointment of new Spanish consuls at several Dominican ports.
