Passage summaryResumen del pasaje

The *Pinedale roundup* reported that the U.S. Navy proclaimed military rule in Santo Domingo to quell political chaos and establish a financial and police protectorate similar to that in Haiti. Approximately 1,800 American marines were tasked with maintaining order and supervising native government operations until January elections, including the disbursement of $600,000 in accumulated export duties. The intervention followed the overthrow of President Jiminez by General Arias and Washington's refusal to recognize the newly chosen government of Frederico Enriquez.

been proclaimed in Santo Domingo by

the United States navy to suppress

existing political chaos in the little re

public and pave the way for guaran

teeing future quiet by establishing

there such a financial and police pro

tectorate as the American goveni

ment now exercises over Haiti.

Eighteen hundred American ma

rines will maintain order for the pres

ent, and at least until elections are

held in January their officers will su

pervise the conduct of government by

native officials and disburse the cus

toms revenues which American receiv

ers have been collecting by treaty ar

rangement for nine years.

The navy proclamation, issued

Thursday, apparently has been put

into effect without bloodshed.

The necessity for a drastic step has

been considered since the overthrow,

several months ago, of President

Jiminez by General Arias, a strongly

anti-American revolutionist. With

Arias in control, the Dominican as

sembly elected Frederico Enriquez

president, but the United States re

fused to recognize the new govern

ment and withheld the balance of cus

toms revenues left after the regular

payments of Interest on the foreign

debt

Consequently the native officials and

employees will draw their first pay

since the downfail of Jiminez when;

on December 2, the American officers

begin to disburse some >600,000 of

accumulated export duties.

Toll of Hunting Season.

Chicago.—Eighty-six persons were

killed and forty-one injured during the

hunting season in fifteen states which

closed November 30. The figures were

compiled by the Chicago Tribune,
