SummaryResumen
The *New-York daily tribune* reported that the cultivation of tobacco had stimulated industry in Santiago, a city with a fine climate and a larger population than its southern rival, which the prevailing party in the late civil war—led by Pedro Santana—sought to make the seat of government. Historically, the territory acknowledged Spanish authority until declaring independence as the Republic of Spanish Haiti in 1821, though the inhabitants soon united with the western Haitian Republic under President Boyer. Following the fall of Boyer twenty-one years later, the people of San Domingo seized the opportunity to regain their independence.
