SummaryResumen

Hurricane Katie beat a path across the Dominican Republic, slamming into the south shore with 115-mile winds the night before, but the mountains of Hispaniola distorted the storm and weakened her winds to about 40 or 50 miles an hour. At noon her center was near Puerto Plata, moving northeast at about 14 miles an hour, and she was expected to regain hurricane force over the open Atlantic without threatening the United States mainland.
