SummaryResumen

The *Evening Star* assessed the military vulnerabilities of Hispaniola, noting that the island's extensive coastline could offer bases to enemy forces threatening U.S. naval installations at Guantanamo Bay and Puerto Rico. While the Dominican Republic possessed a larger army than Haiti, it lacked airplanes, anti-aircraft weaponry, and artillery capable of resisting naval or aerial invasion. The article highlighted substantial pro-Axis sentiment in Santo Domingo, with British diplomats estimating that 75 percent of the populace favored Germany, though American observers believed sympathies were evenly divided.
