may be worth what it costs.

Col Lindbergh refers to “the

island upon which the two repub

lics of Haiti and Santo Domingo are

situated” and there is no doubt as

to their identity, but the class in

geography that closely follows the

hero may be willing to be reminded

that the latter republic became of

ficially the Dominican Republic in

1844, after having been for 21 years

part of the republic of Hayti and

before that the Spanish colony of

Santo Domingo.

The royal commission on customs

and excise has recommended to the

Canadian government a number of

important changes in the Dominion

law to facilitate co-operation with

the United States authorities to pre

vent liquor smuggling into this

country. They include prohibition of

clearances of ships and vehicles

carrying liquor for the United

States, the imposition of an export

tax on liquor, the closing of bonded

warehouses, of which there are 50

in the region of Detroit alone, and

the rearrangement of ports of entry

so that, so far as possible, they

shall be opposite those on this side

of the border. It is a program of

practical neighborliness that it is

to be hoped the Canadian govern

ment will permit to be more than a

gesture.
