SummaryResumen

The *Mineral Point tribune* reviewed Dominican history, noting that the country declared independence from Haiti in 1844 under Pedro Santana, who later alternated presidential terms with Buenaventura Baez. In 1861, Santana annexed the republic to Spain during the American Civil War, but Dominican revolts restored national independence by 1865. The article noted that President Grant subsequently negotiated an annexation treaty with the Dominican Republic that was approved by Dominican voters but defeated in the U.S. Senate by a tie vote.
