SummaryResumen
The Key West Citizen published an editorial describing President Rafael Trujillo's dictatorial grip on the Dominican Republic, asserting that citizens lived in fear of enforced disappearances and state repression. The article portrayed Trujillo traveling in armored convoys out of fear for his safety and enriching himself openly with national public revenues. It observed that these oppressive conditions inspired foreign volunteers, including Americans, to join a recent anti-Trujillo invasion attempt that ended as a poorly planned fiasco.

runs the affairs of his country. No such
thing as freedom exists in the Dominican
Republic. Natives are afraid to denounce
Trujillo because they know that what has
happened to a good many hardy citizens,
who expressed their resentment against
the dictator, may happen to them. Those
objectors disappeared overnight and have
never been seen again.
Trujillo, fearful of losing his life, sel
dom appears in public, and when he does
he rides in an armored car, protected in
the front and rear by contingents from the
army riding in other automobiles. No
other dictator in modern times has used
for his own purposes, without a pretence
of secretion, so much of Hie money collect
ed presumably for the operation and
maintenance of government. Actually, the
entire country is working to make him
richer and rieher.
Those stories evidently appealed to
adventuresome Americans to join in an
‘invasion’ that was designed to rid the Do
minican Republic of Trujillo. But the ‘’in
vasion" was poorly planned and turned
out to be a fiasco.
It was thought at the time that Por
firio Diaz in Mexico was the kingpin of
dictatorships, but he at least worked hard
to help his country as well as himself.
Trujillo, however, is unconcerned by the
hardships and misery that are common
throughout the Dominican Republic. His
only aim is to help himself, members of
his family and his minions in the army.
If you want to get rich, learn how to
save.
If you live by high principles you will
not have to tell apybody.
The good salesman never advises you
not to buy until you have the cash to pay.
