MAY BOMBARD SAN DOMINGO.

France Demauds Indemnity for

Confiscation of a French Bank.

New York special: A dispatch to the

World, dated Puerto Plat, San Domingo,

January 18, says:

“Trouble seems imminent between

France and the Dominican Republic. A

French man of war appeared off San Do

mingo City a few days ago and began to

take soundings. Soon after she departed

another appeared. The latter was boarded

by a pilot, who was informed that his

services were not needed, and when tie

asked the commander his intention, he was

told it was none of his business.”

The San Domingo authorities had a dis

pute with a bank a few years ago, and

eventually took $60,000 from it. The bank

was backed by French capitalists, and the

bankers laid the case before the French

Government. France demanded that the

money be returned to the bank, but diplo

matic negotiations seem to have resulted in

nothing. The World correspondent learns

upon trustworthy authority that the

French ultimatum has already been sent

in and demands the restoration of the $60,-

000 and $20,000 as indemnity. President

Heuraux, it is said, has declared that he

has no money to pay it with.

Dispatches for the Britsh Admiral at Ja

maica passed this port probably asking

him to look after] British interests in caso

of bombardment.
