SummaryResumen

Forty-five Dominican officers and civilians signed a manifesto from Baní on October 27, 1858, expressing indignation over a memoir by Senor Maximo Reybaud that proposed sacrificing their nationality to Hayti. The signatories declared that patriotism among Dominicans remains strong, asserting their readiness to defend the freedom and independence won in 1844 rather than submit again to Hayti.

work of February.

Let Senor Reyband, and any other enemies of the

republic, understand it. Patriotism is not extinct

among the Dominicans-on the contrary, it always

when occasion offers.

Freedom, sir, makes the true happiness of mas.

We who have made so greateacrificestoattain it wilt

know how to defend it.

Accept, sir, the present manifestation as a proof of

the love we hold for our beloved country, and as an

offering to the leader of our separation.

Signed by torte-live offcers and civilians.

Bans, Oct. 27, 1&58.

Most Excellent Sir-With no small surprise and

indignation we have learned that Senor Maximo Rey

our nationality in favor of Hayti, that nation whldb

lies immersed in the darkness of ignorance and bar

barity, and whose iron yoke we threw of In 1844,

swearing to die a thousand times rather than to sub

mit to their opprobrious dominion.

We do not know the character with which Senor

Reyband may be invested; but whatever it be we do

not suppose in him the authority to trespass the limit,

of the respect due to a nation which his own Govern

ment recognizes, still less to directly offend the be

loved head of the people, who to-day representa the

first authority of the Dominican State.

We hold therein an atrocious attempt against na

tional independence, a grave offense against oar Gov
