Monday night.

In the absence of official confirma

tion, the Dominican officials attached

enough importance to the report to in

dulge in a hasty 'cabinet meeting and

to begin negotiations with the resident

American minister to Santo Domingo.

To guard against the failure of these

negotiations, Dominican troops were or

dered from various parts of the country

to the border, he Jndepeucia, the only

Dominican gunboat of any consequence,

was made rvady to convey the troops

and supplies immediately to Perdenales.

The Clyde line steamer Cherokee,

which was at San Domingo City when

tha news came, was detained, the gov

ernment contemplating a request, to the

captain of the ship to transnort troops

to some point near the border on the

south ce5t. According to advices re

ceived here the trouble is due to an old

quarrel over the boundary lines be

tween the two republics. The dispute

recently took u a critical phase owing

to the' nsKcrticid by the Dominicans of

the right of occupation of the disputed

territory and the construct ions of roads

by them north of Perdenales.

The Dominican government is report

ed to be anxious to effect an amicable

settlement, but failing in that will de

mand a definite adjustment of the bound

ary issue.

Three American customs collectors

are in the disturbed section, and two of

them, M. E. Heal at F'.l Sondo and James

J. McLean at Commendnor, have not

been heard from, while word has been

received from John P. Hollesan at Da

Jabon.
