SummaryResumen
According to *The National Republican* on April 5, 1861, Spain sent a representative to the Dominican Republic, while Santana's policies fueled opposition by provoking claims that he was selling the country to whites. Santana sought foreign aid to secure his government's perpetuity and repay a loan, which he used to counter the ongoing intrigues of the opposition and the exiled Baez. Additionally, the newspaper noted Mr. Redpath's view that suggestions of a French reconquest of Hayti are absurd and could harm efforts to colonize Hayti with colored Americans, noting that France has recognized Hayti's independence and draws revenue from it.

Spain. There has been a small emigration
from South America, but this tide, with its flux

This policy of Santana furnished tho ma

This, I venture to say, is the sum total of
the whole hubbub' that we hear from Havana."
Mr. Redpath also notices the suggestion,
that France designs to reconquer Hayti. That
suggestion is, in itself, absurd, but may do mis
