SummaryResumen

The *Washington Daily News* addressed reports from Puerto Rican exiles that General Rafael Trujillo had negotiated with Germany to lease Samaná Bay as a submarine base, dismissing the claims as improbable. The writer argued that Trujillo sought friendly relations with the United States and would view leasing the bay to Nazi Germany as an act of hostility. The piece asserted that in any emergency, Trujillo would likely grant the U.S. Navy use of Samaná Bay and other Dominican ports.

ANENT SAMANA BAY

Now, once more anent Samana Bay.

The other day it was reported that

Gen. Trujillo had negotiated with Ger

many for the lease of that strategic

body of water as a submarine base.

The report emanated from Puerto Rico,

where there are a number of exiled

enemies of the Generalissimo. It does

seem that in view of the fact the

General desires only the friendliest re

lations with this country, he would be

smarter than to enter into any such

negotiations. Especially when he had

so recently entertained a number of

prominent Americans in his own house.

The lease of the bay to the Nazis

would not only be an unfriendly act

to the United States, but a hostile one.

And, also in view of this same friend

liness, it is certain that at any emer

gency the General would permit the

United States Navy the use of Samana

Bay or any other Dominican port, as a

submarine base or any other military

faculty.

These aren’t direct quotes from the

Generalissimo, but they are very defi

nitely the impression received during

our visit. The General knows that we

are friendly to his country, but he also

knows that we expect him to play ball

with us.

SOME MORE ITEMS

Here are just a few more facts about

our visit. The General was the best

of hosts. For young Ham Fish and

young Dick Chatfield-Taylor, he ar

ranged endless amusement. The night

before we left Trujillo City he asked

the boys if they’d like to see a Wild

West movie. Such fun. But little did

the boys know, until they arrived at
