WHAT A U-BOAT CRASH-DIVE LOOKS LIKE FROM A PLANE—Caught by the camera in what

are believed to have been Its death throes was this Nazi U-boat, pictured from an attacking Royal

Canadian Air Force bomber off the east coast of Canada. This rare picture of a submarine

crash-diving for its life was taken as a big Bolingbroke bomber skippered by Warrant Officer

C. S. Buchanan of London, Ontario, roared down to the attack. The U-boat, surprised on the sur

face, is suddenly plunging beneath the water, only its "jumping wires"—designed to ward off

mines and nets—appearing above the surface as waves close over it.

A few minutes later this picture was made as the U-boat was blown to the surface at a crazy

angle by heavy depth charges dropped by the bomber. One more depth charge then was dropped,

the sub sank, and the only remaining signs were bubbles of air, then a big patch of oil.
