SummaryResumen
The *Evening Star* reported on statements by Dominican Minister Dr. Jesús María Troncoso, who expressed confidence that anti-submarine measures would soon reopen sea lanes for Dominican sugar shipments to Britain while expanding food exports to Puerto Rico. Troncoso asserted that Dominican economic warfare was its main Allied war contribution, defended strong Dominican leaders by comparing them to President Andrew Jackson, and denied that the country was run by a dictatorship. He also praised the agricultural settlement for European refugees established following the 1938 Évian Conference.

States and the Dominican Repub
lic.
He is optimistic in regard to the
sugar problem, although shipping
of the Republic's sugar has been
interfered with seriously. He is:
sure that by the end of next year
the Nazi U-boats will have been
sufficiently checked to allow for the
shipment of the mounting sugar
supply to its British markets. Many
other exports are sent to the United
States. Senor Troncosa's govern
ment is developing the exportation 1
of food to nearby Puerto Rico, which
is facing an acute food shortage.
Though the Republic has an army
and navy, the economic warfare
they wage is their most effective
contribution toward an Allied vic
tory.
Unlike her friendly sister republic,
Haiti; tohich is basically French, the
tongue and customs of the Domini
can Republic are from Spain. The
government is modeled after that
of the United States and the people
enjoy freedom of press and speech.
Dr. Troncoso explains that the
leaders of the republic often have
been strong men who bore out the
strength of their convictions with
action, but who, nevertheless, were
far from being dictators. He com
pares these leaders to the American
^resident Andrew Jackson, whose
opinions in his time brought down
cries of dictator.
Dr. Troncoso praises the success
of the refugee settlement in his
country, an idea originated by the
republic at the Evian Conference
in Prance in 1939. The agricultural
settlement was tested on a scientific
basis, with a group of refugees from
Europe selected for youth and health
and character.
