wer harrassed terribly by Dominican guer
rillas; and on reaching a defile at the river
Jomera, were driven back helter-shelter to the
city, losing some 200 killed and wounded.
The Dominicans still hold St. Christobal, thus
preventing all land communications with the
places occupied by the Spaniards. Some 200
Spaniards, 300 rifles 40,000 rounds of car
tridges, and a field piece, had been captured
by the Dominicans.
Santanna's position is critical, and it is
thought the Dominicans might inflict a fatal
blow on him. Two native regiments have
been ordered to be formed in St. Domingo.
A severe battle took place Dec. 20th at
Puerto Plata, in which the Spaniards were de
feated with a loss of 150 out of 600. The
Dominicans are represented as fighting with
great gallantry in this encounter, and cap
tured a cannon.
The Standard, in a resume of the situation
of affairs, says the sooner Spain withdraws
from the dishonorable and unprofitable con
test the better. The Spaniards are masters
only of the ground they stand on, and the dis
trict through which they fight their way one
day is occupied by the Dominicans the next.
The Spaniards will find, instead of vanquish
ing the Dominicans, they will acquire only a
cemetery.
