SummaryResumen
*The New York Freeman* reported on February 20, 1886, that Mr. Astwood's name was submitted for Presidential consideration for reappointment as United States Consul to San Domingo, whose affairs were described as unsettled with an anticipated upheaval due to the presidential succession. The newspaper also stated that recent reports of the assassination of President Salomon of Hayti were unfounded, praising him as a wise and discreet leader. Additionally, the excerpt criticized a note from the *Norfolk Virginian* regarding a statement made by a colored brother, Rev. Hooper Jolly, at a Methodist conference in Philadelphia.

The Sun's correspondent states that the

The assassination of President Salomon of
Hayti, recently reported in these columns,
appears to have no founds'inn in fact. We
are pleased to record this tact, since Piesi

discreet leader and done much to inspire
confidence in the stability of the Haytian
Republic. His taking off would be a griev

The malicious and uncharitable disposi

is illustrated in the following editorial note
from the Norfolk Virginian:
At a recent conference of Methodist ministers
in Philadelphia a colored brother announced an

Jolly, stated that one of his children bought a
stick of candy at a shop near his house the other
day. It smelt strongly of alcohol, and the
preacher said when he ‘'investigated" it he was
horror-stricken at discovering an odor which
