President Trujillo’s special reserve

in adjoining alcoves for Occidentals.

It took the services of a corps of

diplomats to protocol the guest list.

Everybody was invited except Mrs.

Dolly Gann, the Vice President’s

sister, a fact that occasioned some

surprise in view of the cordial rela

tions between Mr. Gann and the

Dominican Government.

Minister Despradel a famous

mathematician—calculated that 400

persons easily could squeeze into the

Chinese Room. Flowers and punch

bowls occasioned some slight incon

venience, but guests sniffed at the

former and emptied the latter.

The distinctly military mass for

mation of the party recalled the fact

that it was given in honor of the

birthday anniversary of President

Rafael Trujillo, formerly of the U. S.

Marines, a gentleman who pays first

his army—then his diplomats—occa

sionally his school teachers—not his

bondholders.

Trujillo’s interest in the party was

attested by a huge creation of vari

hued icings, moulded in the format

of a radiogram from him conveying

greetings to all present.
