he stood by sileutly, but pale with tage,

while the humiliating task was being per

formed.

The people all know the inside mean

ing of this assumption of supreme author

iy. There is a coalition of the French,

Spanish and English diplomatists, to force

this republic, nolens votens, into the swar

thy embrace of Hayti, and for the follow

ing reasons:

1. England is determined not to per

mit white emigration to this island just

as she offers every obstacle to the increase

of whites in her own West India colonies

in order to stop the course of American

progress in the tropics.

2. Spain wants to keep out the Yan

kees, for they might be troublesome so

near Cuba, while the worthless negro vag

abonds of Hayti could do no mischief for

the present; and as long as they can have

their cigaritos and cock hghts, the Span

iards of to-day care nothing for any fu

ture deluge of blood and negro insurrec

tion which the slave trade is preparing for

their children.

3. France wants the mortgage for the

100,000,000 francs, which she holds on

Hayti, to be extended so as to cover tho

whole island.

Louis Napoleon is not the man to make

two bites of a cherry, nor yet to gather his

fruit before it is ripe. He is willing to ac

commodate his allies by Africanizing the

whole island, and then he may take it all

for his debt.

He can make it a fine paying colony by

the introduction of coolie labor, and the

present Chinese war, or the next English

war in India, will supply a million of raw

material at next to uothing ahead, landed

on this soil.
