HAYTIEN REBELLION —Interesting reports of the pro

greas of the rebellion in the republic of Hayti against tl e

gov. r ment of President Geffrard have reached the New

York Herald. At the date of latest accounts the rebels

still held the town of Cape Haytien, and a daily exchange,

of fire was kept up between them and the besiegers. The

former had raised the blockade of the port by capturing

the government blockading v.ssel. It appears that the

English have been to some extent drawn into the contest

through itdignities shown to their Consul at Cape Haytien

by the rebels. The affair is variously reported from dif

ferret sources.

One accourt rays that the difficulty oc

curred by the Consul refusing to give up to the rebels cer.

tain loyalists who were under his protection. Upon this

refusal they broke open the doors of the Consulate, seized

the refugees, and took them out and shot them. There

upon the British gunboat Bulldog opened on one of the

reb:l forts, from which the fire was returned. During the

fight, however, the Bulldog, a British war vessel, got

aground, when, her men being taken off iu boats, she was

s-t on fire and blown up by order of her commarder. "Au

other account states that the trouble was caused by the re.

be’s firirg on a British vessel.
