The action of the government was

taken in order to induce the Holy

Ghost Fathers to alter their decision

to withdraw their missionaries from

the island during the recent disturb

ances.

In a communication received by the

Superior General of the Order from

the President of Hayti, the following

explanation of the action is made:

"Considering that the Fathers of the

Holy Ghost and Immaculate Heart of

Mary have done much to educate the

best citizens of this Republic consid

ering that it seems necessary fcr the

welfare of society that the work of

the Fathers of the Holy Ghost and

Immaculate Heart of Mary, in instruct

ing and educating our people, be de

veloped and made permanent con

sidering, moreover, that there is rea

son to accord to said Order a national

testimonial of gratitude, and establish

its work on a permanent basis on

the report of the Secretaries of Stale,

of the Interior, and of Public Instruc

tion, with the advice and the counsel

of the Secretary of State, the follow

ing law has been proposed to and

passed by the Council of the State:

'The State of Hayti cedes to the

Order of the Holy Ghost and Immacu

late Heart of Mary, for educational

purposes, all the property on which

its institutions are found."

Two priests of the Order, Rev.

Francis Nolan and Rev. Kerry Keane,

were ordained May 7 at the Holy

Ghost Fathers' Mission Seminary near

Darien, Conn., and one of them. Fa

ther Nolan, has already been assigned

to the West Indies.
