Taxpayer Facing

Crackdown for

Return Errors

Internal Revenue Service col

lectors will crack down on tax

payers for failure to report in

terest and dividends which it

estimates total $5 billion an

nually. The Government is said

to be losing $500,000 a year in

income taxes as a result.

Internal Revenue Commis

sioner Dana Latham said today

that his agents would conduct

a "two-pronged program” to

get the additional taxes.

The first phase will be an ed

ucational campaign to acquaint

taxpayers with the law requir.

ing the full report on all such

income.

Then the collectors will make

a closer check on all returns

for interest and dividend items.

The commissioner explained

that recent studies conducted

independently by IRS and pri

vate research groups revealed

the $5 billion gap between the

amount of interest and divi

dends and that reported to it.

The studies show, he said,

that much of the failure to re

port all interest and dividends

is the result of misunderstand

ing of the law or oversight due

to inadequate records.
