Chili,” are now saying the question will be

QUIET AT THE NAVY DEPARTMENT.

The utmost quiet pervades the Navy De

partment this afternoon. No orders to ves

sels were made public by Assistant Secretary

Soley, and Commodore Ramsey admitted

that Admiral (zherardi had gone to sea from

Port-au-Prince with the ('nited States ships

Philadelphia and Concord. They stated,

however, that Admiral Gherardi’s squadron

bad not sailed, which was technically cor

rest, as the hearsarge is still at Porta.

Prince. She is expected to follow in a

few days. Both Commodore Ramsey

and Assistant Secretary Soley confine their

statements even yet to saying that the Phila

delphia and Concord are not at Port-au-"rince,

and they tben add that they don't know

where they are. As to the order to Admiral

(Gherardi to take command, it is said that it

is contingent on hostilities breaking out; he is

to take command only in case of war. Com.

modore Ramsey said that the Department had

sent a message to Gherardi yesterday which

failed to reach him, he having left Port.au

Prince before it arrived there. Of this move.

ment of his Commodore Ramsey said the De

partment had not been notified. He wonld

not speak, however, of the motive of the gen

eral orders issued to Gherardi.
