of your excellent institution and its patrons,

than by aiding to extend the circulation of our

journal. _______________

We earnestly hope that ll.e new Wovertiiuent

of Hayti, under the guidance of patriotism ami

hamanitv. will soon be able to heal the wounds

made upon the external commerce and inter

nal enterprises of the Island by the late furious

and fratricidal struggle.

Hayti's fate eannot be indifferent to us. For

at a time when our agitation for equal rights

and exact justice seemed not to be impossible

of fulfillment here, Hayti was an example t>?

which we could point, and a pledge upon which

we depended, that the negro race would follow

in the pathway of redemption under her lea lership.

But Providence, more careful of the destinies

of our race, has made the United States the

field of all others upon which should be vindicated

at once oar capacity and patriotism.

Here, where lif>erty has room to dwell, where

all humanity may come to meet her, where

justice must be the cement of humanity, we

can now welcome exiles from Ilayti as a grateful

acknowledgment of her past influence in

lilting the negro race to its present respectable

position.
