Spellman Seen

As Mediator

In Haiti Conflict

PORT AU PRINCE. Haiti,

Aug. 28 (AP). —Government

sources say they expect the split

between the state and the Ro

man Catholic Church here will

be healed by mediation. Un

confirmed rumors said New

York's Francis Cardinal Spell

man might be mediator.

The sources predicted yester

day the arrest order for French

Archibshop Francois Prolrler,

56. would be canceled once he

has explained that his pastoral

letter protesting the expulsion

of two French priests was not

directed against President Fran

cois Duvaller’s government.

The government had an

nounced the suspension of the

arrest order but refused to can

cel it.

The quarrel between the

archbishop, highest Catholic

authority here, and the govern

ment had threatened serious

political difficulties for the Ne

gro Caribbean republic.
