SMITH'S DEFEAT

WAS NO SURPRISE

GOVERNOR WILSON WAS NOT

SURPRISED AT DEFEAT OF

SMITHS. WHO WAS AGAIN

BADLY DEFEATED.

New York City.—Interviewed on

the New Jersey primaries in which

James Smith, Jr., was overwhelm

ingly defeated, Governor Wilson, as'

lie was boarding a train for Hartford

said:

"Was anybody surprised?"

Some one suggested that Smith

might have been. Wilson replied

grimly:

"I cannot speak for him. The

meaning of that primary was that

bosses cannot rule in New Jersey."

When asked about President Tafl's

statement issued today, Wilson de-,

clined to reply.

"I argue in speeches, never in an

interview."

"But the president poured some

hot shot into you on the tariff," was

interposed.

"I dare say he did," was the gov-

ernor's curt rejoinder.
