AT GONAIVES

My last letter, 1 believe, descriptive of the coun-

try, left me, knapsack on back, tired and indisposed

to walk, at u distance of several leagues from this

ancient town. The hour was sunset—a season

bere of truly eclestial splendor: for the clouds and

scenery at this time, as elsewhere at the same hour

in the tropics, are indeseribably aud inconeeivably

besutiful. Neither tha poet's pen, in my opinion,

por the brush of the divinest painter, could do the

vaguest justice to a sunset in the tropes: and far

from me be that too common profanity which

attempts, with flippant phrase, to attempt what

Genius coud never fully achieve

We walked on, traversing a wide sandy plan

pearly allof it uncultivated, and oceasionally showing

symptome of the violence of earthquakes, and along

roads that run through sections of well-tended

apparently, and very fertile land: seeing to our

astonishment several fields of eotton, which wa:

from six to eleven feet in hight, and one gigantic

esetus twelve feet high.
