THAT HAITIAN ABSURDITY.

What a miserable farce that Haytian

bombardment must; have been. The

guns from Legitime's fleet knocked the

bamboo huts of the natives into piece.-.:

and then, when the guns from the little

fort returned Legitime's fire, his whole

fleet started on the run. ltis ridiculous

that one poor little island should be the

subject of so much attention, way.

If Hayti has insulted anybody, it ought

to have its jaws slapped and be put to

bed. But the Idea of men-of-war cruising

around the island and afraid to make a

landing, is absolutely absurd.

That cranky, but industrious and in

genious New Hampshire senator.BLAlß,

may be qualifying himself for a Repub

lican candidate for president, in the pa

ternal government era toward which

the evolutions of that party system are

moving. One of his most recent schemes

covers the project of hunting up "in

stances of extreme poverty, hardship

and distress," for the disbursement of

government charity, He was the author

of the educational disbursing scheme,

and of some device for making prohibi

tion national. He will be valuable to

the next administration in the way of

preventing accumulations in the treas

ury.
