'4l ELEPHANTS'

ROBLONOON

By F. A. WRAY

LONDON, April 7.—“ The Forty

Elephants,’’ a gang of women who

have terrlorlzed the West End of

London for eight years, and vic

timized all the big stores time and

again, has been smashed at last

by the police.

They worked in threes, one talk

ing to the shop assistant, while

the other two stole tht articles and

concealed them in their specially

adapted fur coats. If any resist

ance was offered they were capable

of any violence.

One curious fact was that only

tall women were enlisted for the,

gang. The great majority were at

least seventy-two inches in their

shoes.

Their arrests followed a ven

detta against a former member

when a number were injured. They

each received from eighteen to

thirty months’ hard labor and im

prisonment.
