that day. Three of the men were chained together and

the other three were chained to posts about ten paces

apart. A platoon of sixte:n of Hyppolite-s soldiers were

the executing party, and anything more brutal aould not

Be imagined than the murder of the men. Themo-called

soldiers fived three volleys at the men, the first two be-

ing directed at the men’s legs, which were shattered

by the bullets. The third volley killed five ofthe un-

fortunates, but one man was still alive and enrtreated

tor mercy. In answer two of the men stepped out of

the ranks and placing their rifles at the man’s head

blew his brains out. The bodies were left in the street

for the whole day, as a warning to any others in

Jacmel who might be disloyal to Hyppolite. When we

left iffe whole fsTand was in the greatest excitement.
