CURIOUS BITS

OF HISTORY

A CITY LOST THROUGH

SILENCE.

By A. V/. MACY.

Rome is said to have once

been saved by the cackling of

geese, but silence cor.t the

people of Amyklae, an ancient

Grecian city, their liberty. The

report that an enemy was ap

proaching had been spread so

often, creating consternation

among the inhabitants, and as

often proved false, that the au

thorities finally passed a law

forbidding any one to speak of

such a thing. All went well for

a time, but thore came a day

when an enemy did appear, a

hostile Spartan army. But the

citizens of Amyklae were law

abiding. They talked of the

weather, of the crops, of the

approaching track meet, but

never a word did they speak

about the approaching army
