morrow. All Indications are that Southeast

ern Cuba will be the scene of active

naval and military operations for

some time. Here are assembled the

squadrons of great fighting ships,

and, looking down upon them from

the adjacent hills are the watchful

bands of insurgents forming the out

posts of General Gomez's army.

Port au Prince, June 48 :30 a. m.

Further news received here from

Santiago de Cuba confirms the report

that the bombardment of the place

began at 8 o'clock yesterday morn

ing. After the action the Spaniards

blew up with dynamite the sunken

American collier Merrimac and have

I lace been at work clearing the chan

nel, sc as to, in all probability, per

mit Admiral Cervera's fleet to put to

sea should the Cadiz squadron, under

Admiral Cemara, arrive in Cuban

waters to relieve the blockaded ships.

In the meanwhile the dispatches from

Santiago say the Spaniards pay

tribute to the audacity of the Ameri

cans in so cleverly attempting to

block the channel. According to the

Spaniards it would be foolishness on

the part of the Americans to attempt

to force the harbor entrance, which

is described as being long and nar

row and thoroughly mined, seeming

ly forming an insurmountable bar

rier. There is a great number of in

surgents in the vicinity of Santiago,

probably waiting for some decisive

action opon the part of the American

fleet, which will undoubtedly be the

signal for a land attack upon the

town.
