names of peoples from the names of

their countries is to do so by adding to

the latter either “n” and “ns” or “an”

and “ans” or in a few cases, for sake

of euphony, “ian” and “ians.” The

formation of American and Americans

from America sets ihe example. So we

have Mexicans, Cubans. Dominicans,

Haytians, Jamaicans, Guatemalans,

Nicaraguans, Costa Ricans, Colom

bians, Venezuelans, Brazilians, and so

on down to Patagonians. The apparent

exceptions—Canadians, Salvadoreans

and Peruvians —are really nothing but

slight euphonic modifications of the

same rule by analogy with practically

universal American usage; therefore,

we must say “Panaman” and “Pana

mans.”

Scientific Possibility.

A magnificent experiment awaits only

an appropriation from some capitalist’s

wealth. Sir Oliver Lodge mentions that

20 years ago he proved that fog could be

dissipated electrically, and in a dense fog

he cleared a space of 5'J to 60 yards’

radius by means of the discharges from

a Wimshurst machine. Only lack of

means prevented an attempt to give

London a clear atmosphere. Recent ad

vances make possible the desired kind

of dynamo for a continuous current, and

it is believed that an excessive amount

of machinery would not be necessary,

for the fogs occur ir a still atmosphere,

and are seldom of considerable height.

Sir Oliver suggests also that rain might

be electrically produced t as in India,

where the dark monsoon clouds pass

over without discharging.
