Assuredly there is no task to which

the literary worker may set himself

more difficult, in most cases more

thankless, than the translation of

poetry. Rut a labor of love is never

without its reward and M. Moravia

may'find his in the knowledge that his

tender and sympathetic interpretation

gives to Hayti and to France a truer

conception of Heine than is afforded

by the more rigid and literal transla?

tions upon -which English speaking

people depend.

kees have helped to build up the old

state since the beginning, "with a sword

seeking placid peace under liberty."

In the days of peace, before this war,

I used to think this a rather truculent

motto?an unnecessary brag, perhaps.

without carving it out with a sword? I

Just look- years of peace! The world's

improving. There will never be any

more war. Let's disarm."

Then came the Teuton madness, and

Belgium's fate. But for Belgium's

sword?alas! that it could not save

herself!?France would have gone;

then England; then ourselves. Where,

then, would have been our "Peace"?
