STATEMENT BY

AXEL DESSAU:

U. S. Director of Danish

National Travel Office

In our last visit to the Caribbean

nine years ago, we Wwere over

whelmed by the variety charm

of this area. Our most interesting

experience was noting the impor

tance of difference.in the nation

al characteristics of each island--

the French atmosphere of Haiti,

the Sritish traditions preserved in

Jamaica, the Spanish influence

that prevails in Puerto Rico.

These national characteristics

gave .each island a personality -of

great importance in its competi

tion with other islands.

At that time, the Virgin Islands

had economic difficulties. Many of

the historic places we visited were

.very interesting but at that time

“were not in the finest of shape.|

But the islands were certainly

charming and we were impressed'

with their pessibilities as a vaca

tion spot. To us Danes the visit

was, of course, an unforgettable

experience.

Since then many things have

happened. The Virgin Islands are

now one of the most popular

tourist attractions in the Carib

bean--and in Europe, Denmark

has become one of the most popu

lar countries with visitors from

overseas. L

I think you’'ll agree that the

stamp “Danish” is a mark which

certifies quality and creates confi=

dence. Equally, it creates confi

dence with many American tour

ists to be on American soil rather

than travelling in areas where po

litical troubles may occur.

The Virgin Islands are fortunate

in having a.cultural background.

which is popular and enjoys good

_will today--at the same time under
