THE BISHOP A BOBBOWEB.
Church Mortfrnjres to Be Raised With
EnKlith Money.
New York, Aug. 19 Bishop Wigger, of
the Catholic Dioceseof Newark, has con
firmed the report that he proposes to accept
a. loan of $1,500,000 from an English syndi
cate to be used in taking up mortgages on
the churches in his diocese, upon which 5
per cent interest is exacted. Under the
new arrangement only 3 1-2 per cent in
terest will be charged by the foreign syndi
cate. The Bishop of Madison yesterday
said ho would probably have the money
next week. It Is estimated that Catholic
Church property in this diocese, which is
worth about 10,000,000, is mortgaged for
nearly $2,000,000. The syndicate considers
the property gilt-edged security, and is
willing to advance another million it the
loan of $1,500,000 does not prove sufficient.
