SummaryResumen

The *New-York Tribune* recounted political maneuvers during President Buenaventura Báez's historical efforts to annex the Dominican Republic to the United States. The account recalled how Báez jailed political opponents to guarantee passage of the treaty until an American politician persuaded him that a small dissenting vote would look less suspicious. It also detailed an earlier attempt to lease Samana Bay surveyed by Captain George B. McClellan, which collapsed when British and French warships arrived to oppose American acquisition.
