SummaryResumen

The *Essex County Herald* emphasized the strategic importance of Samana Bay as the naval key to the Caribbean, recalling President Grant's earlier annexation efforts. It reported that an unexpected revolution had seized the capital of Santo Domingo during the president's absence, complicating recent American diplomatic agreements compensating a U.S. steamship company. With the Dominican president on the run and the foreign minister sheltering in the American consulate, the paper suggested U.S. marine landings or intervention might follow.
