SummaryResumen

A report from Cadiz dated the 6th states that exiled Dominican generals—including Cabral, Sanchez, Valentine, and Baez—joined disaffected populations to lead a serious insurrection against the Spanish occupation, raising the Dominican flag in La motta, Ney be, Cerca, and San Juan. The insurgents declared that if they could not remain independent, they would prefer incorporation with the Haytien Republic, while the Haytien Government maintained an attitude of observation with only a few prudent frontier troops stationed near the border.

the 6th instant from Cadiz, that the Haytiens have invaded

the Dominican territory. The latest true intelligence from

Hayti is that the Dominican Generals Cabral, Sanchez,

Valentine, Baez, and others, not long since exiled from

Santo Domingo by Santana, all ardent partisans of Do

minican independence, had succeeded in joining the dis

affected populations. A serious and extensive insurrection

had taken place under their direction; the towns of La

motta, Ney be, Cerca, and San Juan had raised the Domi

nican flag, and energetically protested against the Spanish

occupation. They declared that if annexation were in

l evitable, and they must cease to be independent, they

woufd prefer to be incorporated with the Haytien Repub

j lie. In presence of these grave manifestations the Haytien

Government, at the departure of the last mail, was main

taining an attitude of observation. The few Haytien

troops which, as a measure of prudent precaution, had

been stationed near the frontiers, had not advanced a step

beyond them."

THE TREASURY NOTE BILL.

The amendment of the Senate to the Treasury note bill,

authorizing the issue of notes of five dollars, cannot fail to

be acceptable to the people. Surely, if we are compelled

to be satisfied with notes of unchartered banks and of

banks based on State stocks, the Treasury notes must 'of

much preferred. The credit of a great Government like

ours, with unbounded resources, must be preferable to

that of any State.
