The *New-York Tribune* reported on August 4, 1870, that the Dominican government retained ample power to renew annexation negotiations with the United States and propose modifications to address opponents' objections. It noted that the U.S. protectorate had been extended for one year from July 1, 1870, providing the Dominicans with a guaranteed shield against internal revolution, tensions with Hayti, and European intervention. Additionally, the newspaper stated that President Baez and his ministers expressed regret over attacks against President Grant and General Babcock regarding the affair, while dismissing charges made against themselves by unfamiliar critics.
