SummaryResumen

There was a heavy artillery duel between government troops and the insurgents at Santo Domingo City on the night of November 17, and the United States cruiser Baltimore landed a force of marines for the protection of American interests. Minister Powell's despatches to the State Department call the situation desperate: the city is constantly under fire, shells are falling in it, it is surrounded on three sides, an assault is momentarily expected, and it is believed the Dominican government cannot much longer hold out against the revolutionists.
