SummaryResumen
This article describes Santo Domingo as long disturbed by dissensions and revolutionary movements, naming Juan Jiminez, a former merchant of Monte Christi and permanent candidate for the presidency, as one of the chief troublemakers. It recounts how Jiminez in June 1898 organised a filibustering expedition against the Heureaux government and landed at Monte Christi, but failed, his men being killed or captured while he escaped, and how another invasion was hourly expected there in July; it also describes the country's recent acute financial crisis, when the rate of exchange on New York rose more than 100 per cent and a commercial panic followed.
