SummaryResumen
*The Jersey City News* reported that Dominican soldiers fired upon a landing boat from the American schooner *Henry Crosby* near Azua, critically wounding a sailor and injuring the first officer. The schooner's captain sailed to Azua and filed a formal report with the United States Consul General in Santo Domingo, who forwarded the complaint to Washington. The unprovoked attack was believed to have resulted from soldiers mistaking the crew for insurgents attempting to land and overthrow President Heureaux.

drew up in line, and, levelling their carbines
at the men in the Crosby’s small boat,
fired.
One of the sailors threw up his hands and
fell at the feet of his companions. The
others paused in surprise and affright, when
suddenly another volley was fired from the
shore. By this the first officer was shot.
Then the boat was put about and turned
towards the schooner. The sailors rowed
for their lives.
The wounded man was taken aboard the
Crosby. Then it was discovered that the
first officer had been shot in the shoulder and
that the seaman had been struck by several
bullets. A wound in the back is believed to
be fatal.
The Crosby’s captain did not know what
to make of such barbarous and unwarranted
treatment. He hoisted sail and after a time
reached the port of Azua. From there he
reported the outrage to the United States
Consul General at San Domingo City. At
the latter’s request the full details of the
shooting were written out by the captain
and the report has been forwarded to the
United States authorities at Washington.
The letter came by the George W. Clyde
and will probably reach the State Depart
ment tonight.
No information or satisfaction was given
to the American skipper by the Dominican
authorities. It is supposed, however, that
the soldiers believed that the American
sailors were a band of conspirators who
intended to overthrow the Government of
President Heureamr.
The San Domingo offlcialslhad information
of an intended invasion by rebels from
Turks Island, Jamaica, or Hayti, and were
so sure that the invaders were coming, that
