SummaryResumen

The New-York Tribune reported that the U.S. Secret Service arrested Giordani in New York, uncovering his role as the financial agent of a Haitian revolutionary movement under General Fermin. Giordani had previously contracted the printing of 1,500,000 "Deux Gourdes" banknotes, half of which had been stored in a New York warehouse after an earlier failed uprising. Federal authorities intervened to prevent the remaining currency from being shipped to finance active insurgent forces in Haiti.

Acccording te such facts as can be learned

apart from the formal wording of the com

plaint, Giordani has for five years resided for

the greater portion of the time in New York

as the financial representative of the Haytian

revolutionary movement, and several years ago,

after presenting proper authorization, had

printed by the Hamilton Bank Note Company

£1,500,000 of beautifully engraved and “yellow

backed” “Doux Gourdes” bills of the proposed

new Haytian government.

At the time one-half of this currency was sent

to Hayti to pay off the insurgent troops then

in the field, serving under General Fermin. But

before the golden bills arrived in the southern

republic the revolutionary movement had met

with failure, and. according to information in

the possession of the federal authoritles, the

consignment of revolutionary currency was

burned upon its arrival. Since that time the

other half of the money has reposed quietly in

a New York warehouse. The recent Haytian in

surrection, it is asserted, has brought into ex

istence again the self-appointed Haytian gov

ernment behind the currency, and it is said ar

rangements had been perfected to forward the

remaining bills to Hayti to pay off insurgent

troops now in the fleld.

i

Although the bills do not resemble the regular

paper currency of the existing Haytian govern

ment, vet the fact that they bear the heading

“Government of Hayti” brings the currency
